Do I need a referral?+
No, you do not need a referral. If your GP has given you a Chronic Disease Management (EPC) referral, bring it along or email it to us beforehand so we have it on file.
What happens at my first appointment?+
We talk through your history and what is bothering you, complete a thorough physical assessment, explain what we find in plain language, and start treatment with a clear plan from there.
What should I wear and bring?+
Wear something you can move comfortably in. Bring any relevant scans or reports (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound, CT) if you have them. We will make sure you are comfortable throughout.
Is osteopathy covered by private health insurance?+
Yes. Most private health funds cover osteopathy under their extras. We have HICAPS on-site, so you can claim on the spot and only pay the gap. The rebate depends on your level of cover.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by Medicare?+
Osteopathy may be covered under a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (EPC) plan if your GP refers you. This is generally for people managing chronic conditions. Check your eligibility with your GP.
What is the difference between an osteopath, a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?+
All three treat musculoskeletal issues with different emphases. Osteopathy is hands-on and whole-body: it looks at how everything connects to find and address the underlying cause, not just the sore spot. The right choice often comes down to the practitioner and the fit for you.
How qualified is an osteopath?+
In Australia, osteopaths complete a minimum of five years of university study and must be registered with the Osteopathy Board of Australia via AHPRA. Registration requires ongoing professional development each year.
When do people usually see an osteopath?+
People commonly attend for back and neck pain, headaches, shoulder and hip pain, sciatica-type pain, sports and gym injuries, and postural or desk-related complaints, among other musculoskeletal concerns.
What techniques might be used?+
Treatment is tailored to you and may include soft tissue techniques, articulation, muscle energy technique, joint techniques, dry needling, cupping, and stretching or mobility work. Not every technique is used in every session.
How many sessions will I need?+
That depends on your presentation and goals, and it is something we discuss with you after your assessment. The aim is a clear plan with a sensible endpoint, not an open-ended schedule.
What if I need to cancel my appointment?+
We ask for at least 12 hours notice for cancellations or reschedules by phone. Late cancellations or missed appointments may attract a fee. If you are unwell or something happens outside your control, just let us know.
